Who is a candidate for weight loss surgery?
There are internationally recognised guidelines* for adults, which are:
- Aged from 18 to 60 years
- BMI >40 without or >35 with obesity related health conditions (Body Mass Index = weight (kg) / height (m)2 )
- Failure to lose weight or maintain long term weight loss with other appropriate non surgical methods
- No alcohol or drug dependency problems
- No uncontrolled psychiatric conditions
- Understand the surgery and risks
- Dedicated to changing lifestyle including diet and exercise
- Are able to undergo regular lifelong medical follow up
*Additional patients outside these guidelines may be considered depending on individual circumstances.
- Abdominal Fat carries an even higher risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Risks are increased with a waist measurement over 94cm in men and 80cm in women and are greatly increased over 102cm in men and 88cm in women.
- Some ethnic groups eg. Asians have increased risks at lower weight, BMI and waist sizes than Caucasian patients.
- Patients with medical conditions that can be improved with weight loss may also be considered at lower BMI levels than specified above.
