Having moved to Western Australia from Wales in 2004 to undertake a post as an Upper Gastrointestinal Specialist Surgeon at Fremantle Hospital, Alan co-founded Upper GI West with fellow Specialist Surgeon Mr Krishna Epari in 2008. Their practice has grown exponentially to offer a multi-disciplinary approach – offering their patients an all-encompassing service to provide the best possible outcomes; including multiple specialist surgeons, bariatric physicians and dietitians.

Alan graduated from Sheffield University and continued his training in Queensland - Australia, Wales, and the North Trent and West Midland regions of England. Alan further continued his studies completing his subspecialty training in Upper Gastrointestinal and Obesity Surgery at The Northern General and The Royal Hallamshire Hospitals in Sheffield; and Fremantle Hospital. Prior to returning to Australia in 2004, Alan completed a Diploma in Medical Law from Northumbria University.

Alan’s main interests are endoscopic and laparoscopic treatment of morbid obesity, metabolic syndrome, hiatus hernias and reflux disease. Having obtained a Diploma in Medical Law, Alan also has an active interest in the medico-legal side of surgical practice.

Alan remains true to his Welsh upbringing and is fluent in both English and Welsh - a benefit he continues to bestow upon his children.

Mr Alan Thomas | Bariatric Surgeon Perth

When you grow up in Wales, every lad wants to become a footy player. But things have to fall in place and it didn’t quite work out for me. I was pretty good with my hands and was very interested in biology, so it lent its self to studying medicine and on to surgery.
