Mr Matt Henderson
Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon
My parents were heavily involved in the community. And one day, when I was still a child, a man was shot and he came to live with us after he’d had his surgery. I remember spending a lot of time with him and thinking…the doctors that fixed this man had an awesome job.
Matt is originally from South Africa where he trained in Johannesburg at the University of the Witwatersrand. On completion of his medical degree, Matt moved to New Zealand where he trained as a General Surgeon obtaining his FRACS in 2011. He was subsequently selected to the Australia and New Zealand Gastro Oesophageal Surgery Association Program for subspecialty training in Oesophagus and Stomach Surgery. He completed this training at Sir Charles Gairdner and Fremantle Hospital in Western Australia. Matt currently still holds a consultant position at Fremantle Hospital today.
During his training Matt developed specific interests in the surgical treatment of morbid obesity, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, hiatus hernias, achalasia, gallstones, abdominal and inguinal hernias.
In addition to his private practice and public health appointments, Matt is teaching and supervising medical students within the Faculty of Medicine at Notre Dame University, Fremantle - which he thoroughly enjoys. Matt mentors these students both within his private practice and the hospital system – inspiring the next generation of general surgeons.
My interests include the surgical treatment of morbid obesity, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, hiatus hernias, achalasia, gallstones, abdominal and inguinal hernias.
